How to Fit Everything on a One-Page Resume (Without Sacrificing Quality)
Struggling to fit your resume on one page? Learn practical strategies for trimming content, optimizing formatting, and deciding what to cut without losing impact.
The One-Page Rule Still Matters
Despite what some career coaches say, the one-page resume is not dead. For anyone with fewer than 10 years of experience, a one-page resume is still the standard expectation. Recruiters and hiring managers consistently report that concise resumes are easier to evaluate, and ATS systems parse shorter documents more reliably.
The challenge is not cutting content -- it is cutting the right content while keeping the details that actually get you interviews.
Step 1: Remove Everything That Doesn't Earn Its Space
Start by eliminating these common space wasters:
- Objective statements -- replace with a 2-line professional summary or remove entirely
- References available upon request -- everyone knows this; it wastes a line
- Street address -- city and state are sufficient; full addresses are outdated
- Irrelevant jobs -- that summer lifeguard job from 8 years ago is not helping
- Soft skill claims -- "hard worker" and "team player" without evidence mean nothing
- Hobbies and interests -- unless directly relevant to the role
Step 2: Tighten Your Bullet Points
Wordy bullets are the biggest space consumer. Apply these rules:
Remove filler words: "Successfully managed to implement" becomes "Implemented." Words like "successfully," "effectively," and "in order to" add length without adding meaning.
Combine related bullets: If you have two bullets about the same project, merge them into one stronger bullet.
Cut to 2-3 bullets for older roles: Your job from five years ago does not need six bullet points. Keep the top 2-3 achievements and move on.
Before (3 lines):
- "Was responsible for managing the team's project timelines and deliverables"
- "Helped ensure projects were completed on time and within budget"
- "Collaborated with stakeholders to gather requirements"
After (1 line):
- "Managed project timelines for a 12-person team, delivering 95% of projects on time and under budget"
Step 3: Optimize Your Formatting
Small formatting changes can recover significant space:
- Reduce margins to 0.5 inches on all sides (default is often 1 inch)
- Use 10-11pt font size for body text (never go below 10)
- Reduce line spacing to 1.0 or 1.1 instead of 1.5
- Use a compact font -- Calibri, Arial Narrow, or Garamond use less horizontal space than Times New Roman
- Single-space your contact info on one or two lines at the top
- Remove blank lines between sections -- use slightly larger headings with a bottom border instead
Step 4: Consolidate Older Experience
If you have 8+ years of experience, group older roles into a brief "Earlier Experience" section:
Earlier Experience
- Junior Developer, Acme Corp (2018-2020) -- Built internal tools using Python and Flask
- IT Support Specialist, XYZ Inc (2016-2018) -- Managed helpdesk tickets and system provisioning
Two lines instead of ten bullets. The recent roles carry your story; the older ones just show career progression.
Step 5: Use a Skills Section Efficiently
Instead of listing 30 skills with proficiency levels, group them by category on 2-3 lines:
Skills: Python, TypeScript, Go | React, Next.js, Django | AWS, Docker, Kubernetes | PostgreSQL, Redis
This takes one section header and two lines instead of a long multi-column table.
When Two Pages Are Actually OK
Two pages are appropriate if you have 10+ years of experience, multiple relevant roles, and significant publications or patents. Senior executives, academics, and specialized consultants often legitimately need two pages.
But even then, ask yourself: is everything on page two earning its space?
