How to List Certifications on a Resume (With Examples)
Learn where and how to list professional certifications on your resume. Includes formatting tips, which certifications to prioritize, and examples for IT, healthcare, finance, and more.
Why Certifications Matter on Your Resume
Certifications signal that you have verified, up-to-date knowledge in a specific area. For many industries -- IT, healthcare, finance, project management -- they are not optional. They are requirements. Even when not strictly required, certifications help you stand out in a competitive applicant pool and boost your ATS keyword matching.
The key is knowing how to list them so they get noticed by both ATS software and hiring managers.
Where to Put Certifications on Your Resume
You have three options depending on how central certifications are to your role:
Option 1: Dedicated Certifications Section
Best when you have 3 or more relevant certifications. Place this section after Skills or Education.
Certifications
- AWS Solutions Architect -- Associate | Amazon Web Services | 2025
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) | CNCF | 2025
- HashiCorp Terraform Associate | HashiCorp | 2024
Option 2: Combined With Education
Best when you have 1-2 certifications and want to save space.
Education & Certifications
- B.S. Computer Science, University of Michigan, 2023
- AWS Solutions Architect -- Associate, 2025
- CompTIA Security+, 2024
Option 3: After Your Name
Best for certifications that are industry-standard credentials (PMP, CPA, RN, PE).
John Smith, PMP john@email.com | (555) 123-4567
This approach works because hiring managers immediately see your credential without scrolling.
Formatting Each Certification Entry
Include these four elements for each certification:
- Full certification name -- spell it out, then add the abbreviation
- Issuing organization -- who granted the certification
- Date earned -- year is sufficient
- Expiration date -- if applicable, add "Expires: 2027"
Example: "Project Management Professional (PMP) | Project Management Institute | 2024 | Expires: 2027"
If you are currently pursuing a certification, list it as: "AWS Solutions Architect -- Associate | In Progress, Expected June 2026"
Which Certifications to Include
Only list certifications that are relevant to the job you are applying for. A Google Analytics certification is great for a marketing role but irrelevant for a nursing position.
High-Impact Certifications by Industry
Technology:
- AWS / Azure / GCP cloud certifications
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- CompTIA Security+, Network+
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
Project Management:
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM)
- PRINCE2 Foundation / Practitioner
Finance:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
Healthcare:
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Certifications and ATS
ATS systems match certifications as keywords, so include both the full name and the abbreviation. For example, write "Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)" rather than just "CISSP." This ensures the system catches the match regardless of how the employer configured their keyword filters.
When to Leave Certifications Off
- Expired certifications with no plan to renew -- these can raise questions
- Irrelevant certifications -- a food handler's permit on a software engineering resume adds noise
- Very basic certifications -- LinkedIn Skill Assessments and similar lightweight badges generally do not carry weight
