How to Write Resume Bullet Points (Formula + Examples)

Master the formula for writing powerful resume bullet points. Includes the XYZ method, action verb starters, quantification tips, and before/after examples for every career level.

The Formula That Makes Bullet Points Work

Weak bullet points are the number one reason resumes get ignored. Hiring managers scan your bullets to answer one question: "What can this person actually do?" If your bullets describe responsibilities instead of results, you blend in with every other applicant.

The formula is simple: Action Verb + Specific Task + Quantified Result

This is sometimes called the XYZ method: "Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z." Every bullet on your resume should follow some version of this structure.

Before and After Examples

Marketing

Before: "Responsible for managing social media accounts."

After: "Grew Instagram following from 2K to 45K in 8 months by creating a weekly content calendar and partnering with 12 micro-influencers, resulting in a 65% increase in website traffic from social."

Software Engineering

Before: "Worked on improving application performance."

After: "Reduced API response times from 1.2s to 180ms by implementing Redis caching and query optimization, improving page load scores by 40% across the platform."

Sales

Before: "Helped increase sales revenue for the team."

After: "Exceeded quarterly sales quota by 130%, closing $1.2M in new business by developing a consultative selling approach targeting enterprise accounts."

Customer Service

Before: "Handled customer complaints and issues."

After: "Resolved an average of 45 customer tickets daily with a 98% satisfaction rating, reducing average resolution time from 4 hours to 45 minutes by creating a troubleshooting decision tree."

Start Every Bullet With an Action Verb

Never start a bullet point with "Responsible for," "Helped with," or "Assisted in." These weaken your contribution. Instead, lead with verbs that show ownership:

  • For building things: Built, Developed, Created, Designed, Launched, Implemented
  • For improving things: Optimized, Streamlined, Redesigned, Revamped, Accelerated
  • For leading things: Led, Directed, Managed, Spearheaded, Coordinated, Mentored
  • For growing things: Grew, Increased, Expanded, Scaled, Doubled, Generated

How to Quantify When You Don't Have Numbers

Not every role comes with obvious metrics, but you can always find ways to add specificity:

  • Team size: "Led a team of 8 analysts..."
  • Frequency: "Produced 3 weekly reports for executive leadership..."
  • Volume: "Processed 500+ invoices monthly..."
  • Scope: "Managed a $2M annual budget across 4 departments..."
  • Time saved: "Automated data entry process, saving 10 hours per week..."
  • Coverage: "Supported 200+ employees across 3 office locations..."

Even rough estimates are better than vague descriptions. "Improved efficiency" says nothing. "Improved efficiency by approximately 25%" tells a clear story.

How Many Bullets Per Role

Follow this general guide:

  • Current or most recent role: 4-6 bullets
  • Previous roles: 3-4 bullets
  • Older roles (5+ years ago): 2-3 bullets or combine into a brief summary

Your most recent experience should take up the most space because it is most relevant to your next role. Older positions can be trimmed to save room.

Tailoring Bullets to the Job Description

Generic bullets lose to tailored bullets every time. Read the job posting carefully and rewrite your bullets to mirror their language. If they say "cross-functional collaboration," include that phrase. If they want "data-driven decision making," show a bullet where you used data to make a decision.

ResumeSnap automates this by matching your experience to the specific job description. It rewrites your bullets using the right keywords and action verbs for each application, saving you hours of manual customization.

The Final Check

Read each bullet and ask: "So what?" If the bullet does not answer that question with a clear result or impact, rewrite it until it does.
